Beano's EP launch for Beano at the Back Page in Phibsborough was a true celebration of hip-hop culture. The crowd itself was a fascinating mix, a cross-section of backgrounds united by their shared love for the music. As the Belfast Groove Collective, a dynamic group of multi-instrumentalists from Northern Ireland known for their unique blend of hip-hop, soul, R&B, and jazz, took the stage, the room buzzed with positive energy. It was clear everyone was on the same page, there for the good vibes and great music. It was an authentic, community-driven experience that highlighted the unique vibe of the venue.

Following the Belfast Groove Collective's set, the air crackled with anticipation. As the band segued into a hypnotic, continuous groove, a freestyle session erupted, seemingly spontaneously. MCs, some seasoned performers, others plucked from the crowd, surged forward, trading verses like lightning strikes. The enthusiasm was infectious. It wasn't a performance; it was a vibrant jam, with every onlooker grabbing the mic to add their voice to the mix. This unfiltered display of talent embodied the very essence of the night.

The sense of community was further amplified by the presence of artists featured on Beano's album. Hearing Panda Dre, whose lyrical fire burns bright on "Boutique Kennel," trade bars in this live setting was a powerful testament to their shared passion. Don Kobz, whose lyrical skills are showcased on "Stained Monocle," also joined the celebration. ConKan, fresh off the release of his 'Eat Food' EP (learn more here), also graced the stage, adding his signature energy to the electrifying freestyle. But the stage wasn't limited to album contributors. A slew of other MCs, a testament to Dublin's vibrant hip-hop scene, also stepped up to the mic. The energy was infectious as names like Steve Loc, Doh Fada, Finnbarr, OSA, Scauldy, Lyrical Sal, and even Osa No Venom, Cale Smith, and Noru showcased their skills, some with full sets and others jumping in for impromptu freestyles, further solidifying the collaborative spirit of the night. This vibrant showcase of local talent paved the way for a special appearance from UK hip-hop royalty.

High Focus Records, known for their roster of skilled MCs, then took the stage, and the crowd responded with palpable excitement. Their intricate wordplay and tight delivery resonated deeply with the audience. Each member brought their own distinct style to the set, spitting rapid-fire rhymes over the pulsating beats. Their appearance underscored the growing connection between the Irish and UK underground hip-hop scenes, reflecting a shared passion and a mutual respect for the craft. This cross-pollination of talent was further highlighted by the next act.

Verb T, a respected figure from the UK, then delivered a standout performance. A luminary in the UK hip-hop scene, Verb T—born Thomas Conning—has been active since 1999 and is known for his raw lyricism and storytelling prowess. His presence was a particular highlight, especially given his contribution to Beano's album on the track "Trap 7," bringing his distinctive style to the project and now to the night's vibrant energy. Throughout the night, conversations with members of the crowd revealed a palpable excitement surrounding Verb T's latest album, HomerLoan, released in 2024 and currently available on Spotify. Many were eager to hear tracks from the album performed live, adding an extra layer of anticipation to his set. As a key member of The Four Owls and a solo artist, Verb T's music explores introspective themes with a gritty realism that deeply resonates with listeners, making his live performance all the more compelling.

As the night progressed, members of IED took a moment to sit at the back of the venue with producer and MC No Venom, the mastermind behind all the beats on Trap 7. While discussing the production, one of us noted as "Silver Back" came on, “That beat stands out. That bass is fat—I think that’s my favorite beat so far.” To which No Venom proudly responded, “I played all those instruments live. I’m proud of that one—that’s me playing the bass.” It was a moment that highlighted the incredible attention to detail and craftsmanship behind the album. Not only is No Venom a charismatic and engaging presence, but his skill as a musician and producer is undeniable. His dedication to live instrumentation brings a level of depth and authenticity that elevates Trap 7 beyond just another hip-hop release.

Then came the night’s centerpiece—Beano himself. With Trap 7 marking his latest creative milestone, Beano has been steadily making a name for himself in Dublin’s hip-hop scene. Signed to OutStraight Records, he previously made waves with his debut album Unsolicited Beef, which included standout tracks like Ellenfield Park Flow, a nostalgic reflection on his formative years. His influences range from early 2000s icons like Eminem and 50 Cent to the raw, lyrical essence of New York boom bap, drawing inspiration from artists like Big L, Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, and Big Pun. Beano’s ability to shift between high-energy, hard-hitting tracks and introspective storytelling has made him one of the most dynamic voices in Irish hip-hop today.

Throughout the night, Beano was busy autographing CDs and engaging with the crowd, fostering intimate interactions with both longtime and new fans. This free gig was all about inclusivity and celebrating the music, with Beano embracing everyone in the room. It was clear that the event was more than just a performance—it was a celebration of community and connection.

The venue, intimate and underground, created the perfect atmosphere for the night. The staff were attentive yet unobtrusive, allowing the event to take center stage. By the end of the night, it was evident that this wasn’t just another gig; it was a landmark moment for Dublin’s hip-hop scene. With OutStraight Records at the helm, events like this continue to push the culture forward, proving that Irish hip-hop is thriving and evolving.
